Absolutely mental BMW made this and the V10, sounds so good. I love tak ing my Uncles E93 M3 to Cars & Coffee but am saddened how muffled it sounds with the stock exhaust.

Released to the public just before the Great Recession. Definitely feels like BMW gave their engineers carte blanche to make the most amazing engine(s) they could. Also, fuel economy be damned. LOL
Tell your uncle to get the “OEM exhaust mod” done.

I thought it was more, we spent all the money on F1 might as well get something out of it.

Yeah, you’re right, I think
. Similar to the Mercedes hypercar they’re working on.
So, I’m not sure how I’m just now making this connection, but my car’s engine is the “nephew” of the one in my beloved LEGO model’s car...

So, h ow much was the S85 actually related to the P80/1?
“880 hp and revved to an astonishing 18,000 rpm”
“In its general layout, the M5 and engine relates to, and was inspired by , the V-10 Formula 1 engines that BMW developed from 2000-2005. In fact, both engines’ major castings are done at the same BMW plant.”
From the above, it doesn’t really seems like they’re at all the same.

It did come out in the V10 era, and I heard that it was at least inspired by the P80/1. Obviously there’s a lot changes between an F1 engine and a road car engine.

Obviously. Was a “clean sheet design” apparently
, not based on any previous ///M
engine, but definitely inspired by their
F1 engine (folks pay big bucks for that kind of connection, even if it’s largely hypothetical)
. Will be interesting to see how similar the engine in the Mercedes road car actually
is to the one in the F1 car.
